William L. Richter
William L. Richter co-founded Cerberus Capital Management, L.P. with Stephen A. Feinberg in 1992. Cerberus manages private equity and hedge funds with more than $31 billion in assets under management. Cerberus invests in distressed debt and equity, poorly managed real estate, mortgage-backed debt, and middle market asset-backed loans which it usually originates.
Born in New York City, Mr. Richter attended public schools prior to enrolling at Harvard University in 1960. At Harvard, he received an A.B., magna cum laude, from Harvard College in 1964 and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1966. He received an honorary Ph.D. from St. Bonaventure University in 2006 where he served on that university's Board of Trustees from 2002-2005.
Mr. Richter is President of Richter Investment Corp., a merchant bank which he co-founded in 1982 with Gerald L. Cohen. He is also Chairman of AbsoluteCARE, Inc., which owns and manages two comprehensive care centers, in Atlanta and Baltimore, which treat chronic and/or infectious diseases. Until its merger with a subsidiary of Guardian life Insurance Company of America early in 2016, Mr. Richter served as Chairman of the Board of AbsoluteCARE’s parent company, Avēsis Incorporated, which operates a vision, dental and hearing managed care business.
Outside of work, investments, and philanthropy, Mr. Richter is an avid golfer, a collector of impressionist and modern art, and author of a book, Kissing Frogs, about his life in finance.
